Located at the center of Silicon Valley, the city of Santa Clara is one of the major cities in California. It was named after the Mission Santa Clara de Asis being the site of the eighth of the 21 California missions. Santa Clara is home to Mission College and the Santa Clara University, the oldest higher learning institution in California. The city of Santa Clara is home to the headquarters of many high tech companies like Intel, Sun Microsystems, Applied Materials, Agilent Technologies, McAfee, and NVIDIA. The United States office of the renowned Namco Bandai Games is also located in the city of Santa Clara. These high tech companies are the biggest private employers in the city. Among the top ten employers in Santa Clara are Intel, Oracle, Applied Materials, Agilent Technologies, Affymetrix, BAE Systems Land & Armaments, National Semiconductor, Nortel, EMC, and Renesas. The many opportunities that Silicon Valley has to offer has been attracting many companies and employees in the city. Santa Clara also enjoys considerably cheaper electricity rates with its electric utility called the Silicon Valley Power. In 2005, the Donald Von Raesfeld Power Plant was brought in by the Silicon Valley Power to produce 147 megawatts of electricity from the new combined cycle gas turbine plant. Great America, Cedar Fair, L.P.’s famous amusement park is also located in Santa Clara. The city is also home to the headquarters and practice facilities of the San Francisco 49ers NFL football team.
