About Des Plaines, Illinois

Des Plaines is named after a river that runs through the city, the Des Plaines River. The meaning of thecity’s French name is "of the plains." The city is located in the Cook County, Illinois. The "City of Destiny" has become the official name of Des Plaines since 1960. The City of Des Plaines is about 17 miles from downtown Chicago. Its location is within minutes away from all main transportation centers such as the Interstates 90, 94, and 294, Chicago’s O’Hare International airport, and CTA ‘L’. The Des Plaines Park District maintains and operates a water park, two golf courses, and a driving range. The Cook County Forest and two park districts maintain about 700 acres of open space and park land. The two Park Districts are Mt. Prospect Park District and Des Plaines Park District. There are scenic lakes, family aquatic centers, adventure miniature golf, 18-hole Par 3 golf course, technologically advanced fitness centers, horseback riding trails, and bike and hiking trails. The world's biggest non-residential YMCA is also in the Park District. Aside from Park Districts, Des Plaines has various bars, restaurants, museums, and other places for entertainment. One of the well-known restaurants in the city is the ChooChoo Burgers where hamburgers and meals are delivered to their patrons by a toy train since 1952. The first McDonald's franchise opened at Des Plaines. It was owned by Ray Kroc, founder of the McDonald's Corporation. It is located in Lee Street downtown and it has become a McDonald's Museum.
