About Monroe, Louisiana
The city of Monroe is the principal city of the Monroe Metropolitan Statistical area. It is currently ranked as the eighth largest city in the state of Louisiana in terms of population. Monroe, together with its neighboring city West Monroe, lies across the Ouachita River making them known as the Twin Cities in the northeastern region of the state. Way back in 1803, the city got her name from James Monroe of the state of Virginia, who was also the fifth President of the United States during that time. Together with Robert R. Livingston, an American lawyer and a diplomat from New York, Monroe traveled to Paris to negotiate the Louisiana Purchase for the acquisition of the Louisiana Territory and paid a total amount of $15 million. Other prominent personalities moved to the city of Munroe to bring their business to the place. One of them is Joseph A. Biedenharn, the first bottler of Coca Cola (a soft drink company) and one of the founders of Delta Airlines, which moved to the city from his hometown in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Biedenharn bottles are the original bottles made for Coca Cola which was very different from the current design. The home and gardens of Biedenharn is now a house museum and named as Biedenharn Museum and Gardens, located at the 2006 Riverside Drive. The city of Monroe also boasts several Golf Courses like the Chennault Golf Course, The Links at Muny, Frenchmans Bend Country Club, and Bayou Desiard Country Club. There are also shopping malls within the city such as the Pecanland Mall, the largest mall in northern Louisiana.
